Taunton Flag
By the 1770s, Taunton Massachusetts had a rebellious fervor and a group called the Sons of Liberty. The Town had sent attorney Robert Paine to the First Continental Congress. On October 21, 1774, a 112 foot high liberty pole was raised in the village green with the words “LIBERTY AND UNION” added to the Red Ensign flag.
Taunton is 40 miles south of Boston and 18 miles east of Providence, Rhode Island. On October 24 the Boston Evening Post reported on this new flag. It flies in Taunton to present day.
