48 Star Flag

In 1912, New Mexico and Arizona were admitted to the Union, increasing the number of States to 48. Keeping step with this development, President Taft issued an executive order in which the relative proportions of the flag and the arrangement of the stars were officially prescribed for our 25th flag. The 48 Star Flag, thus created, remained our national emblem for more than 46 years. It was carried by the Armed Forces of the United States into both of the Great World Wars.
